What can ChatBud do?
ChatBud is, at its core, a chatbot. It has options to play games like 20 Questions, I’m Going on a Picnic and Once Upon A Time. It can answer questions, prompting children to learn based on what they are curious about. It engages them to write stories together and fuel their imagination. Buddy can also help them learn new languages! To make things easier for new readers, it also has built-in voice options, including voice-to- text and “read to me.”
How is this different from Chat GPT?
Chatbud is built with GPT as an engine, but it has custom rules established, such as to always stay positive, keep responses brief and to age-appropriate language. It corrects children when they make a typo or other error, in the interests of helping them learn! It provides suggested prompts to children designed to pique their curiosity. It is also trained on the Ontario educational curriculum, to support topics like language, mathematics and social studies.
What happens if my child asks questions about something inappropriate?
When a child asks a mature-themed question, it directs them to ask their parents about the topic. It will provide answers only to topics that are appropriate for a grade 1-4 audience. We’ve tested this fairly extensively and haven’t been able to get it to break its internal rules. But kids are inventive! We cannot guarantee that they won’t find a way around it, but it’s much safer than a general Google search.
Is this tool is safe to use?
We take your privacy seriously. We will not share any of the information you or your child enter in the system. Any logging or monitoring is done strictly to help make the tool better, and is 100% anonymous. Payment and login information are kept in a different database from the Al tool, and is not shared with the Al engine.
What is the plan for future features?
After beta release, we intend to build in a parent dashboard so you can track your child’s progress and see the themes for what they are chatting about. We also plan to let kids choose from a variety of buddies, and build additional bots for older kids, with more advanced lessons and a coding tutor.
